Openoffice -- is a free multiplatform and multilingual office suite software that has word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing, database, HTML, and XML documents. You can open Microsoft documents too. OpenOffice.org Version 1 was the first product to deliver the benefits of open-source software to the mass-market users. Available on all major computing platforms (Windows, Mac OS X & X11, GNU/Linux, and Solaris).

Browser -- software is needed since I.E. is liked by most hackers because of the scripts Windows uses. I recommend getting Firefox for better protection but you can use Avant or Opera which are more like I.E. but more secure.

Graphic programs -- Gimpshop has the same menu as Photoshop and is made from Gimp. Gimp was the first to make a program like Photoshop. XNView is an efficient multimedia viewer, browser and converter image program. Using XnView you can take some photos and make your own screensaver exe file.

Anti-virus programs -- AV Personal is a great anitvirus program. AVG is another anti-virus. Remember to download the free file 7.362 which is on the bottom of the main page.

Spyware -- removers are a must. Spybot is my favorite but you need more that one to remove all the spyware. Ad-aware was done after Steve Gibson found the first spyware. He gave all the documents of spyware to the German company and asked it to be free.
